Should Sunspot Lives participate in the Blackout?

Should Sunspot Lives participate in the Great Internet Blackout on January 18th?

SOPA opponents gaining momentum; Wikipedia to join blackout
http://redtape.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/....o-join-blackout

SOPA opponents are rallying around an effort to call attention to the legislation by convincing Web sites to "go dark" on Jan. 18, and display only a simple message of protest on a black background. On Monday, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales announced that his website will go dark for 24 hours starting at midnight ET Tuesday, following the lead of other high-profile promised blackouts. Reddit.com will go black from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The hacker group Anonymous also encouraged others to join in the 12-hour blackout, and garnered a lot of attention with its Twitter post using the hashtag #BlackoutSOPA.

Yes, actually, it should. But I don't know if Board Admin can do that.

sandy, there are threads about this issue in Nationals (here's one), and you can learn more by reading the link jaimiegrey offered. The gist of it is this: the entertainment industry seeks to harm the Internet, which it wrongly perceives as a big threat to its outmoded business models. So it wrote some legislation which it introduced through some tame or bought Congressmen and Senators.

Thanks for clarifying that Evil Yoda. I didn't see the other thread since I don't read Nationals regularly.

What people don't realize is that SOPA is a threat to what we have here. For example, if one person posts a link to a Youtube video, someone can complain to the federal government which would have grounds to shut down this site.

Or for example, if the Baltimore Sun wanted to shut down Sunspot Lives, they probably could find a post here that quotes a few paragraphs from a Balto. Sun article and request that this site be shut down.

I agree with the opposition to SOPA and PIPA, and I'm going to try to take the site down between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday as part of the blackout.

If you could do that it would be great. If there is some way to put something up that explains that it's part of the Internet Blackout protesting SOPA and PIPA it would help inform people of what is going on.

Legislation comes from the legislative branch.

In fact, Obama is threatening a veto of the bill.

A waste of time in my opinion. The proposed Sunspot Lives blackout will achieve nothing other than to increase the Baltimore Sun forums traffic for the day and give the Sunspot administrators a sabbatical.

It might be a waste of time but maybe not.
I do wonder if your penchant for government rule makes you write the above post in wishful thinking.
and finally a quote

Quote:
That’s partly because entertainment companies have deep and long-lasting relationships inside the Beltway. Maplight, a site that researches the influence of money in politics, reported that the 32 sponsors of the legislation received four times as much in contributions from the entertainment industry as they did from software and Internet companies.

Yes. It's an awareness issue; this is a bad law, very over reaching. Protecting copyright IS important- but not the way this law is approaching it.

Wikipedia will be down for even longer. Go there and read about their opposition to these bills, if you wish to learn more.

Wikipedia is big enough that its temporary outage will get the information in front of viewers about Hollywood's shameless attempt to subvert the First Amendment.

I think it can make a difference. Even though there are only a few hundred people who visit this site, we're the people who are -- as one of my library science teacher professors said -- "The Gatekeepers. These are the people who keep up with issues and share the information with the rest of their communities."
